
How a 700-acre farm builds soil, and the raised-bed version
A 700-acre farm and your raised bed have more in common than you would think. Both live or die on the same handful of things: carbon, nitrogen, water, and time.
Denver Botanic Gardens happens to run both ends of that scale at once. Its own instructions for the small version turn out to be exactly what a backyard gardener needs.
Why does a botanic garden run a 700-acre farm
Chatfield Farms is Denver Botanic Gardens' working farm and native plant refuge, 700 acres along Deer Creek in southern Jefferson County. Its Community Supported Agriculture program grows seven acres of vegetables, flowers, and fruit for subscribers and community donations.
The Gardens name the priority directly: "healthy soil is a critical piece of regenerative agriculture," and the team shares "the ingredients for soil health" and ways to cut carbon dioxide release, water use, and weeds "with some simple techniques," per the Gardens' Food Programs page. Since the CSA launched in 2010, the first offered by a botanic garden, it has supplied 325+ subscriber families weekly with fresh produce for 20-23 weeks a year, with several tons of vegetables donated since it began.

The soil work does not stop at the CSA fields
On Denver Housing Authority land in the Sun Valley and Mariposa neighborhoods, Denver Botanic Gardens grows more than 30 varieties of produce on a half acre, distributed through 30 free farm stands each season, per the Food Programs page.
Healthy soil is what turns a half acre into 30 farm stands worth of food. Your own compost pile sits on the same continuum, just at raised-bed scale.
Your compost bin, by the numbers
Here is where the Gardens hand backyard gardeners the exact numbers the farm-level page only gestures at, from their own compost bin guide:
- Pick a spot with 3 to 4 hours of full sun a day and unrestricted airflow on at least two sides, about 2 feet from a fence or corner.
- Build a bin around 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet, roughly 1 cubic yard, so the pile can reach the temperature it needs to decompose.
- Layer a roughly 2:1 ratio of brown, carbon-rich material (dried leaves, chopped branches) to green, nitrogen-rich material (kitchen scraps, fresh grass and leaf clippings). Skip meat and dairy.
- Water the pile at least once a week, more in hot weather, and turn it once a month to keep oxygen moving through it.
Expect 4 to 6 months before the material visibly starts breaking down, and 8 to 12 months before the compost is ready to harvest. When it is, apply it around the base of your plants and till it into the top 1 to 2 inches of existing soil.
A bin roughly a cubic yard in size holds enough material to actually heat up and break down.
