Most of us treat soil testing like a spring chore, something to squeeze in between seed orders and the first warm weekend. That timing works against you.

How to actually collect a sample

Cornell Cooperative Extension lays out the process simply. Dig 6 to 8 inches deep at several spots around the garden, skipping any area with recent fertilizer or compost application.

Pull sub-samples of about 1/2 to 1 cup each into a clean bucket, mix them together, then bag 2 to 3 cups and drop it off at your local extension office. Results typically come back in about a week to a couple of weeks, depending on the office.

Finish the fall soil checklist while you are out there

  • Clear debris, fallen leaves, and weeds from beds: dead material and weeds can harbor pests and disease and compete with next spring's plants.
