
Squash bugs and vine borers: the fall cleanup that gets you ahead of next year
A squash or zucchini plant that collapsed on you seemingly overnight this summer had a squash vine borer inside it. Gray, shield-shaped bugs clustered under the leaves are their less dramatic but just as persistent cousin, the squash bug.
Both pests are winding down for the year right about now, but winding down does not mean gone. It means they are looking for somewhere to spend the winter, and your garden bed is the obvious candidate.
The vine borer: prevention beats cure
The squash vine borer is a day-flying moth that lays copper-colored eggs on plant stems. Once the larvae hatch and burrow in to feed, water can no longer flow past the damaged stem, and the plant collapses, per Clemson HGIC.
Control is extremely difficult once a borer is already inside the stem, which is why prevention beats any after-the-fact fix. Two moves help most: row covers, removed at flowering so pollinators can work, and regular monitoring to destroy the tiny eggs before they hatch, about a week after laying.
If a borer gets in, the plant is not automatically a loss. Clemson's guidance: slit the stem lengthwise with a small knife, remove and kill the larva, mound soil over the cut section to encourage new roots, and keep watering.
A day-flying moth lays the eggs that turn into a vine borer, so it rarely looks like a moth problem until the plant wilts.
Variety choice matters too: butternut and Green-Striped Cushaw are practically immune to vine borer attack thanks to dense stems, while Hubbard squash is highly susceptible, according to Clemson HGIC's cucurbit insect pest guide. Worth factoring into next year's seed order if borers have been a recurring headache.
The squash bug: this is exactly the moment to act
Squash bugs play a longer game. They overwinter as adults, preferring cucurbit fields under crop debris, clods of soil, or stones, sometimes spreading to nearby woodpiles or buildings, per UF/IFAS.
They run one generation a year in northern climates but two to three in warmer regions, so gardeners farther south face more bugs hunting for a winter hideout by fall.
Michigan State University Extension puts the timing about as plainly as it gets: "Controlling squash bugs in the home garden starts now, in the fall." Removing debris and old plants from in and around the garden reduces places adult bugs can hide and survive winter.
A board left near where your squash grew works as a trap: check under it on cool mornings and clear out anything hiding there. It works because the bugs are looking for exactly that shelter.
Squash bugs would rather overwinter under a board than brave the open ground, which is exactly what makes a trap board work.

Zone 7-8: Warmer regions support two to three squash bug generations a year instead of one, so more adults are hunting for overwintering sites by fall. The long season also gives vine borers more time to do damage, which is one more reason to favor resistant butternut types here.
Zone 9-10: Mild winters can let more overwintering squash bug adults survive outdoors than in colder zones, so fall debris removal is the main lever you have to cut that number down before spring.
