
Powdery mildew on squash and cucumbers: the fall cleanup that stops next year's outbreak
If your squash or cucumber leaves look dusted in gray flour, that is powdery mildew. By this point in the season it has probably taken over more of the plant than you would like.
It is a group of closely related fungi that shows up as a grayish-white powdery mat on leaves, stems, and flowers, according to Clemson HGIC's powdery mildew factsheet. It rarely kills the plant outright, but a bad case cuts your harvest short.

Next year's mildew is hiding in this year's debris
The fungus survives winter attached to plant parts and plant debris, including the fallen leaves already piling up under your squash plants. As spring warms up, it starts producing spores again right where it spent the winter, per the same Clemson factsheet.
The mildew-covered leaves sitting in your garden bed right now are not this year's problem winding down, they are next year's outbreak waiting.
Cucurbits get hit especially hard. Powdery mildew is the most common and damaging disease of pumpkins, and it is a particular problem on late-planted squash, according to Clemson HGIC's cucurbit disease guide.
That same guide points out that removing plant debris after harvest matters because many cucurbit diseases, powdery mildew included, survive on that debris year to year. Crop rotation is one of the cheapest, most effective controls available, and resistant varieties exist for most cucurbits.
Powdery mildew's grayish-white coating is the easiest cucurbit disease to spot in the garden.
Pull it now, do not compost it
Clemson's core prevention advice: good air circulation, avoiding overhead irrigation, removing infected plant material, and choosing resistant varieties where you can.
Pull the mildew-covered vines once they are done producing. Bag or trash them rather than tossing them on the compost pile.
That last part matters more than it sounds like it should. Iowa State Extension's guidance on fall garden cleanup draws a clear line for the vegetable garden specifically: the whole vegetable bed, leaves, stems, fruit, and all, should come out after the first frost, since most edible plants carry disease and pest issues that can overwinter on debris.
Composting only kills the fungus if the pile actually heats to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, and most home compost piles never get there.
Many municipal composting facilities do reach that heat. If you are not sure your pile runs that hot, trash the mildew-covered debris instead.

Zone 3-4: A short season usually ends with frost before mildew gets too far along, but pull spent vines, powdery leaves and all, before the ground freezes. Removing the debris is what breaks the cycle, not the cold alone.
Zone 5-6: This is your classic fall pull window. Bag mildew-covered vines instead of composting them, and pencil in crop rotation so the same bed does not host cucurbits again right away.
Zone 7-8: A longer warm season means more mildew generations through late summer into fall. Late-planted squash is specifically called out as more mildew-prone, so cleanup carries even more weight here.
Zone 9-10: Mild winters let fungal disease pressure stick around year-round in humid areas, so debris removal and rotation matter outside the traditional fall window too.
Zone 11+: Warm, humid conditions favor fungal disease nearly year-round, with no hard freeze to reset pest pressure. Resistant varieties and strict rotation carry more of the load here.
