
Fall leaves are worth more than the curb
We know the routine: rake, bag, curb, repeat until the tree is bare. But those bags hold real value.
Penn State Extension puts the leaves of one large shade tree at roughly $50 worth of plant food and humus, and pound for pound, most tree leaves carry about twice the minerals of manure. Before you bag another pile, here is how to turn it into something your garden can use.

A sugar maple leaf runs over 5 percent mineral content by weight; pine needles run about 2.5 percent, mostly calcium, magnesium, nitrogen, and phosphorus, according to Penn State Extension. Hot compost is the faster of the two routes
Start with a 6 inch layer of leaves, shredded or whole, then a 2 inch layer of something green and nitrogen-rich: grass clippings, manure, green weeds, or vegetable scraps. Leaf mold takes longer but almost no effort
Leaf mold is the slower, lower-effort route: pile the leaves, pack them down, keep them moist, and wait. Penn State Extension puts that timeline at roughly six months to two years, depending on whether you shred first.
A contained bin 3 to 6 feet across and at least 3 feet tall keeps things tidy, but a perforated plastic bag or an old trash can with holes punched in works just as well. Leaf mold will not carry the nutrients hot compost does, but it improves soil structure and water retention, and unlike compost or manure, it stays mostly weed-free. Clemson Extension frames the same basic process as a 3 month to 1 year job: pile, water, and turn once or twice a month.
