Protecting fall brassicas from cabbage worms before they shred your kale

You finally got your fall broccoli, cabbage, and kale in the ground, and within a couple of weeks the leaves look like lace. The moths and caterpillars that worked over your summer cole crops did not clock out for the season.

They are still out there, and your tender new transplants are exactly what they are looking for.

The single best move: get ahead of them with row cover

Texas A&M AgriLife's Travis County office puts it plainly in its fall vegetable garden guidance: use row cover or netting over brassica plantings specifically to keep moths and butterflies from laying eggs on the foliage in the first place.

Put it on right after you transplant, and you skip the whole problem instead of fighting caterpillars after the fact, per the same guide.

Row cover is not a set-it-and-forget-it fix on its own. Inspect your plants regularly anyway, destroy any eggs you spot, and handpick caterpillars while they are still small, exactly what the Travis County checklist recommends alongside the cover itself.

What to do if they get past the cover

Clemson HGIC lays out a four-layer approach once caterpillars are already established:

  • Clear out weeds around the garden so pests have fewer places to overwinter.
  • Remove crop residue as soon as you finish harvesting so nothing left behind can complete its life cycle.
  • Hand-pick caterpillars every few days on smaller plantings.
  • Lean on biological control before reaching for a spray.

That biological layer is worth building into your garden on purpose. Plant sweet alyssum, dill, parsley, cilantro, buckwheat, or fennel around your brassicas, since these small flowers attract the parasitic flies and wasps that prey on cabbage worms, and skip broad-spectrum insecticides, which kill those same beneficials right along with the pests you are trying to control.

If a spray is genuinely warranted, Bacillus thuringiensis, better known as Bt, is the go-to biological option. It is a bacterial spray the caterpillar ingests while feeding, and once inside it releases toxins that stop the caterpillar from feeding until it starves, per Clemson HGIC. Chemical control should be a last resort, used only after scouting shows you actually need it.

Zone 3-4: Even this far north, the imported cabbageworm can squeeze in several generations before frost, since it manages four to five a year across its range. Get row cover on fall brassica transplants right away, since a short season leaves little room to recover from an early infestation. Zone 5-6: This is the classic fall brassica window. Broccoli, cabbage, and kale go in right when cabbage worm moths are still active, so cover transplants with row cover or fine mesh netting as soon as you plant, and scout every few days while eggs and small caterpillars are easiest to handpick.

Zone 7-8: You sit closer to where cabbage loopers migrate in from, so fall weather systems can bring in bigger numbers than gardeners farther north see. A long warm season also supports more generations of imported cabbageworm and diamondback moth building up through summer into fall.

Zone 9-10: Mild winters can let some of these pests overwinter outdoors rather than dying off completely, so scouting and row cover matter through more of your fall and winter growing window than they would in a colder zone.

Zone 11+: Warm, humid conditions here mean pest pressure rarely fully resets, and a short life cycle like the diamondback moth's likely keeps producing new generations nearly year-round.
